I first saw Suiren two springs ago, during Kichion (Kichijoji Music festival), a week-long "Golden Week" event that has the whole town awash in music of all types. Suiren, which means "water lotus" is a reggae band fronted by Hirotsugu Mochida and Kappa Sight. Hirotsugu Mochida is the singer-songwriting, guitar player, and Kappa Sight is the voclaist who sings and raps. Together, they lay down some really nice melodies with Hirotsugu Mochida's smooth, smokey voice (husky voice in Japanese), intertwining with Kappa Sight's rapping and backup singing. Kappa Sight can also take the lead and sing like the Asian soul sister that she is. I love to hear her sing Suiren's original "Super Woman". But you'll have to catch one of Suiren's highly entertaining live shows to hear that song because unfortunately it's not on Jindies.com yet. But Suiren's other tunes are every bit as good. Just check them out and I think you'll agree.
