Enka, a traditional, and until now, very un-hip, form of Japanese blues or soul music, is experiencing a revival amoung young Japanese because of an especially cool, young African-American guy.
Another important point - Non-Japanese don't sing Enka! Until now, that is. I always liked some Enka songs and artists. And I always thought that Enka singers were the best in Japan and equal to the greatest among R&B and Soul singers from the west. Just listen to Yashiro Aki sing "Mo Ichido Aitai" to confirm that. Buy Jero's CD (4 songs) on Amazon Japan (English page is available). Pittsburg, PA-born Jero, a computer engeering graduate of the University of Pittsburg (my hometown). was exposed to Enka music by his beloved Japanese grandmother. |
